About Geoff
Geoff put his first dark room together in 1969 at the age of thirteen. Under the direction of his father, a forensic and clinical pathologist who used photography professionally, he learned the fundamentals of photographic science. Working with a variety of manual cameras he learned the exacting process of capturing detailed, accurate and comprehensive documentary images. With his father’s guidance he also learned the complementary image production skills in the dark room.
In an early course in photography, Geoff learned about the work of Ansel Adams and became an adherent of his methods, later journeying to Yosemite to visit and photograph the subjects of so many of Adams’ images and to view his original prints at his gallery. As a graduate student at the University of Rochester, Geoff was able to pay regular visits to the George Eastman House/International Museum of Photography where he was introduced to the work of many of the masters of the art from all eras.
In college and graduate school, where he earned degrees in Physics, Geoff studied the optics, the physics of light, and the mathematics that underlies photography and image science. In his professional work as an entrepreneur in technology ventures, Geoff has worked in many and diverse areas of imaging, from medical and satellite imaging to color printing, graphics and special effects generation for movies, image and video compression for Internet application, and projects in machine vision and human visual perception. Geoff became an expert in Color Science and was an early participant in the International Color Consortium that still oversees the specification of color profiles that calibrate cameras, monitors and printers.
Throughout this time Geoff maintained his interest in photography, often using his own work as an experimental laboratory for new developments in image processing technology. He followed the development of new cameras, lenses, and films, and participated in the transition from traditional “wet chemistry” film photography to digital photography. (And for many years refused to shoot digital because of the lack of spatial and tonal fidelity.) In the late 1980s Geoff developed a digital image editor with special capabilities for newspaper pre-press applications at about the time Photoshop was first released. (And some years later had the opportunity to work with John Knoll, one of the originators of Photoshop.)
As digital photography has matured, Geoff has continuously explored the boundaries of what could be achieved in this new medium. His current work combines state of the art (Nikon) digital camera bodies and lenses with the latest versions of Photoshop (CS5 Extended) and Photoshop Lightroom (v3), Epson Professional printers, and his own custom-developed software and methods for image processing.
About the Prints
All prints are produced by the photographer himself using his own state-of-the-art Giclée process. The inks are an archival set designed to be light-fast for centuries. The 8-ink set reproduces a huge color gamut compared to traditional 4-color processes and the ultra-precise pressurized print system controls droplets less than 4 trillionths of a liter to create a raster of more than 4,000,000 points per square inch.
When combined with High Dynamic Range and Ultra High Resolution images, the capabilities of Photoshop CS5 Extended and Photoshop Lightroom 3, and custom imaging software developed by Geoff, the result is a vast, rich, and nuanced image.
Media are matched to the image and include traditional satin finish and exhibition fiber photo papers as well as canvases. All are archival, as are the acid-free mat board, linen mounting tape and other materials.
